Arrive in Amman, where an A&K representative transfers you to your luxurious hotel.
Travel to Jerash, a third-century city dubbed the “Pompeii of the Middle East” for its well-preserved Roman remains. Continue through mountains along scenic King’s Highway and the breathtaking Gorge of Amman. Beyond, Madaba — the “City of Mosaics” — reveals the oldest preserved mosaic map of the Holy Land. Pause for a traditional lunch with a Jordanian family before heading to Petra.
Explore the “rose-red” city of Petra, sculpted from mountains by the Nabataeans during the third century BC. View the baths, markets, Treasury, Temple of the Winged Lions, Corinthian Tomb and Palace Tomb.
This morning, Proceed to Mount Nebo, the site where Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land. View Bethany Beyond the Jordan, where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Continue to the Dead Sea and your hotel.
After a morning at leisure, fly to Cairo, the starting point for your journey back to the era of the pharaohs where upon arrival you are transferred to your luxurious hotel.
Explore the 4,500-year-old pyramids built for Pharaohs Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus on the Giza Plateau; the Great Pyramid is the last survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Guarding these ancient masterpieces is the Great Sphinx, the world’s largest monumental statue. After pausing for lunch, discover the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, housing the world’s greatest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including the treasures extracted from Tutankhamun’s tomb. This is also the site of the Mummy Room, where the remains of the great Ramses II, Egypt’s longest ruling pharaoh, are displayed.
Built during the reign of Ramses II, the two temples at Abu Simbel are considered among the most beautiful in all of Egypt. The larger temple houses statues of Ra-Harakhte, Ptah, Amun- Ra and Pharaoh Ramses II himself. The axis of the temple is positioned in such a way that, twice annually, the sun’s rays penetrate its sanctuary and illuminate the sculptures. Continue to Aswan and board ‘Sun Boat IV.’ This afternoon, visit the granite quarries where the Unfinished Obelisk lies.
This morning, take a motorized boat to the island of Agilika and the majestic Temple of Philae; it was moved here and reconstructed to protect it from flooding, a by-product of the Aswan High Dam’s construction. Afterward, visit the symmetrical Temple of Kom Ombo, a double temple. Built at a bend in the Nile where crocodile once basked in the sun, one of its sides is dedicated to Sobek (the crocodile god), the other to Haroeris (the sun god). Cruise to Edfu to the Temple of Horus. Then, ready yourself for a festive, costumed “Egyptian Night” party for all guests, featuring a lavish buffet of local fare, music and dance.
Set out to discover the expansive Temple of Karnak, the largest in Egypt, and the Temple of Luxor. After lunch, explore the west bank of Luxor, home to the Valley of the Kings, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom were laid to rest. Explore the Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female pharaoh. Tonight, attend a farewell dinner on ‘Sun Boat IV.’
Bid farewell to Upper Egypt, touring Islamic Cairo and the Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan. Walk the Khan el-Khalili thoroughfare from Bab el-Fotouh to Khan el-Khalili Bazaar, the heart of the old walled city of Cairo.
Board your international departure flight.
